Let’s define what we mean by systems and habits. Simply put, a system is a set of steps or processes that we follow to achieve a specific goal.
For example, if you’re trying to save money, you might set up a system for tracking your spending and setting aside a certain amount each month.
Habits, on the other hand, are automatic behaviors that we engage in regularly. They’re the things we do without even thinking about them. For example, brushing your teeth before bed is a habit.
We can create both systems AND habits to help us succeed
So why are systems and habits so important for reaching our goals?
First, they provide structure and consistency. By setting up a system for a particular goal, we can break it down into manageable steps and track our progress. This helps us stay on track and avoid getting sidetracked or overwhelmed.
Habits, on the other hand, are essential for making progress because they allow us to perform tasks without having to think about them. This frees up our mental energy for more important tasks and helps us stay focused.
Planning your financial future can seem overwhelming. By setting up a system we can break it down into manageable parts like saving for college, getting the right insurance and saving money weekly in an investment account.
Another value of systems and habits is their ability to help us develop new skills and improve our performance.
By setting up a system for learning a new skill, we can break it down into smaller, manageable tasks and track our progress. This allows us to see the progress we’re making and stay motivated.
Habits allow us to practice a skill regularly, which is essential for mastering it.
Systems and habits can also help us overcome procrastination and overcome obstacles that might otherwise prevent us from reaching our goals by breaking down the task to its base components. After all they say the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.
Just like procrastinating doesn’t make the elephant smaller, putting off your financial planning will not make it easier to accomplish your goals
The values of systems and habits in reaching our goals are numerous. They provide structure and consistency, help us develop new skills and improve our performance, and overcome procrastination and obstacles. By incorporating systems and habits into our daily routine, we can achieve our goals and live a fulfilling life.
